Fall

The Fall

In the darkest days of the global market, Robert Thompson found himself having lost all of his worldly possessions. Broken beyond words, he and his daughter boarded a train. She would need to help him out for a while.

As the train crossed a rundown bridge over the forgotten Undercity, despair consumed him as his daughter, sitting next to him, told him that he was a failure, in routine fashion. For Robert, the thought of her taking care of him was unbearable.

"Rejected by my own daughter," he thought. "How can I go on?"

He opened the door, and jumped. Sara, his daughter, screamed—a moment of instant regret for her, and one she would face for years to come. She held on and peered down below. Underneath the tracks was a dark city which felt miles away, her father now completely lost, and her mind in pain. "There's no way he survived," she thought. "What have I done?"

Undercity

The Undercity

Yet somehow, unbeknownst to Sara, sometime later he awoke.

He had fallen into the labyrinth beneath their futuristic civilization, where the sun never reached, where nobody returned from, and where darkness reigned. There, beneath a cracked overpass, he dragged himself underneath an abandoned monster truck, and made it his home.

Days became weeks.

Weeks became years.

Jimothy

Jimothy

Why the racoon statues you ask? When Robert first woke up, he found that escaping The Undercity was next to impossible. He survived on whatever he could find—which happened to be raccoon.

But one night, among the glowing eyes in the darkness, he discovered a raccoon unlike all the others.

It was weird. Misshapen. Shorter legs? Not quite… A shorter spine perhaps? Yes. Its tiny limbs scuttled across buildings, looking for scraps. He took pity on it. He saw it as a sign. It reminded him of his own broken nature.

He named it… Jimothy.

The Idol

Robert Thompson became convinced that Jimothy was the chosen one. The sight of Jimothy brought him joy. He no longer needed to leave the Undercity. He could find comfort in staying right where he was at.

He plastered together statues from broken concrete and trash. He built shrines from shopping carts and hubcaps. He whispered prayers into sewer drains hoping Jimothy would bring him luck.

Soon, Jimothy was no longer just a deformed raccoon. Jimothy had become a way of life.

Many strangers in the Undercity mocked him. Some pretended to believe. Some stole his statues and claimed them as their own, even pulling the rug he slept on out from under him. Shameful.

Each betrayal hardened his heart against people, until trust itself became a myth.

Light

The Light

Then, on one particularly bleak morning, Robert glimpsed a beautiful dog on the city’s dark horizon. He began walking toward it. Again and again, he lost sight of the dog—only to catch another glimpse farther ahead.

Then he saw it. Not the glow of neon. Not another dumpster fire. Real sunlight.

Standing in its warmth was a magnificent doge—a doge beyond all understanding. Silent. Graceful. Watching him without judgment.

In that instant, Robert’s illusion shattered. Jimothy had never been salvation. Jimothy was only the false hope Robert had created because he was afraid to face the light.

Robert stood. He left every statue behind. He left the darkness. He climbed out of the Undercity.

And for the first time in years, he simply sat in the sun.

Lesson

The Lesson

And when newcomers asked what became of Limbothy… the old builders simply smiled.

Limbothy wasn't the destination.

Limbothy was a lesson of ending the cycle which had driven him mad. It was a lesson to look to the light, and hope.
